Old Queen

Old Queen was a brown mare
We got before I started school
She was young then as horses go
But she was nobodies fool

We often rode her after mail
And to bring in the milk cows
She was part of a harness team
That we used to mow the hay

She could open the barn door
And also the pasture gate
To leave her just bridle tied
Was a very big mistake

The bridle would still be there
But she would be long gone
And you’d end up walking
Maybe two or three miles home

When she got tired of us riding
And decided she’d have no more
She’d scrape us off on the cloth’s line
Or else at the barn door
