Death With Dignity
At ninety-two, my life’s nearly over
Yet, the nurses around me hover
Doing their best to try and save me
Please, let me die with some dignity
I’ve loved and laughed, cried and smiled
Done all the things that make life worthwhile
There are things worse than death, I’m sure you’ll agree
I’m living in hell, in this bed don’t you see
Last night, I was at heaven’s door
Too tired to struggle anymore
Some heroic soul checked on me
And denied me death with dignity
Now I have a tube in my nose
To feed me fluids I suppose
It’s such an effort to eat you see
Actually death looks good to me
It’s miserable to live here alone
While you ache in every joint and bone
To have to be changed, turned and fed
Honestly, I wish I were dead
Because of the laws of our great land
And so many seemingly merciful hands
Doing their task and caring for me
I’m denied death with dignity
I’m ready for death, waiting to flee
This hell here on earth, for eternity
Please, Lord take pity on me
And grant me death with some dignity
